Photo Tips

Stan Glazer has generously agreed to share his "Tips & Tricks" for photographing fireworks from his presentation during the Club's Essay Night, as listed below.  Thanks, Stan:

                   Photographing Fireworks

Equipment:

Secure tripod
Remote control or cable release
Lens – variable or fixed focal length
Small flashlight

Camera Settings:

Focal length –select based on area to cover,                    usually less than 70 mm
Mode -fully manual,  flash Off
Aperture - f8 to f16 (for ASA 100)
               - f11 to f22 (for ASA 200)
Shutter Speed - "B" for fully manual. For auto                       shutter, (0.8) 2 to 5+ (8) seconds.
Focus – manually set before show

Pointers:

Anticipate! Follow the rocket trail. Heights will usually be constant. You want the shutter open just before the main burst.  You want to close the shutter before debris and floating material appear.  Use a quick shutter for individual or a small group of bursts and longer exposures for panoramas,  composites and multilayer's of bursts.
